Levinsson, lecturer at Institute for Russian and Eurasian Studies, and Svanberg , researcher at the same, start with some background on the border issues of Kazakhstan and China. Used as a buffer state between the Russian Empire and China, the border had stayed where Chinese defences against the Kazakh nomads had stood. This was felt to be the actual border by all but China. After the Beijing/Moscow split of the 1950s, China played a stronger role in Xinjiang and made claims for territory in East Kazakhstan.
